Ready to experience the lively atmosphere and bustling streets of Soweto? Let’s go!

On this full day tour your guide, (born and bred) will take you past all the hotspots in Soweto.

We affectionately refer to this as the good, the bad and the Ugly. The tour will take you deep into the township culture, so you can attain a personal experience of the diversity and rich history this part of Johannesburg has to offer.

En route to Soweto, we pass by the famous National Football Stadium City, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Soccer World Cup 2010. From there, we enter the Diepkloof area, where the vendors are located, selling just about anything you can conjoure up in your imagination.

In Orlando West we visit Vilakazi Street- drive past the Mandela House where a visit into the museum is optional as well as past the home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. You will have an opportunity to read about the Soweto uprising on 16 June 1976. On that tragic day, an innocent little boy called Hector Pieterson gave up his life and kick-started the liberation of South Africa.

For you to truly experience the full history and heritage of this famous township, our tour will take you into the depths of the shanty towns where you get to interact with some of the locals and see how they live.

We drive past the Soweto Campus of the Johannesburg University and end off our tour with a stop at the largest hospital in the world: Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Buffet meal at a local Restaurant, enjoy the delicious tastes and smells of local cuisine( starter , main course and dessert)

Apartheid museum

After Lunch we visit the world famous Apartheid museum where you will learn about the history of South Africa and the struggle of its people during the apartheid era for approximately 2 hours before returning you back to hotel around 17h00

You can read all you want to about South African Apartheid and Soweto, but experiencing Soweto first hand really drives home the reality of the terrible existence that blacks were forced to endure. The tour itself was well-run and included pick-up/drop-off at our hotel near the airport and lunch.

We recently did the Full-Day Soweto City/Apartheid Museum Tour while we were staying in Johannesburg. We were picked up on time (well early actually, because it was a Sunday and not much traffic around!) Our guide Tsolo was a very personable and well informed young man who told us a lot of very interesting information about Soweto and Johannesburg in general. Loved Soweto – friendly, cultural and eye-opening! Good to visit this place about which we had heard so much! We had a great lunch in Soweto and then on to the amazing Apartheid Museum. Our only negative about the whole day was that there was not enough time to fully appreciate and enjoy the Apartheid Museum – you could easily spend a whole day here! But hey – gives us a reason to return and spend more time here! Thanks so much for a great day!

Your tour guide – Bobbo was brilliant – a true ambassador to your company and the people of South Africa.

The tour was well structured and it did not feel rushed. Bobbi was very engaging and made everyone feel very welcome. It was like being at the United Nations once everyone was picked up – we had 7 different countries represented!

Service – from booking to drop off was excellent a big 5 out of 5

This tour really gives exposure to the rich political history of Soweto during the apartheid era and what Soweto looks like post apartheid. In addition to the historical sites, I’m glad the tour allowed us to see Soweto upfront and close, from the poor shacks, public housing, to the middle and rich neighborhoods. I left with a deep impression of the personal sacrifices and enormous contributions of the people of Soweto to overcome apartheid and its ongoing struggles. Our guide Bobo, a resident of Soweto was excellent. My only constructive criticism would be to have more time at Nelson Mandela’s home and the Apartheid Museum.

This was an excellent day out and very good value for money. I was staying with friends in Johannesburg and the minibus collected me from this address. Our tour guide Bobo was very knowledgeable and gave us an excellent overview of this city within a city. I felt I learnt a lot about Soweto and we visited all the major areas of this fascinating township. Bobo answered questions fully. The lunch was ok – a braii of chicken wings, steak and sausage with chakalaka, coleslaw and the traditional mealie.
After lunch we visited the Apartheid museum which is an absolute must – a moving and sobering experience.
The tour ended with us being returned to our hotels.
i can thoroughly recommend MoAfrika tours.

We did the Soweto and Apartheid museum tour which is a full day too. I enjoyed it and found it very interesting – the apartheid museum is big and all presented – we had about 2 hours to spend which was the right amount of time. The tour of Soweto was also interesting although a little uncomfortable in places as it felt like we had stopped to watch people go about their days. Our guide (Sunny i think his name was?) was amazing – incredibly funny and knowledgable. The only criticism is that we thought the price of the tour was actually quite expensive when tallied up .

We can only recommend this company. Easy to book

We had a wonderful and very informative guide, Nick, who’s knowledge of Johannesburg was impressive. During the drive across town to pick up the other clients, Nick shared the history of these neighbourhoods, explaining their growth. These back stories enriched our understanding of Johannesburg, and a natural story teller, Nick made the journey interesting while at the same time demonstrating his excellent driving skills and knowledge best route to use to get from place to place. It was raining in the morning so Nick made the decision to go to the Apartheid Museum first which was a great decision as we were in and out before the crowds came. We stopped at several museums and points of interest which were well explained and anchored in both an historical and current framework. By far the most compelling part of this trip was when we went into Klipton, the district neighbourhood. Be prepared to see desperate poverty and high density living. While emotionally draining we are glad we were allowed to see this first hand.
It was an excellent and thought provoking day. Nick was a huge part of its success. HIs knowledge, sense of humour, flexiblity and sincerity made us feel safe at all times and humbled by this experience.

Moafrika tours is the way to go when looking for a township day tour,we booked the soweto,Apartheid and lunch tour on a saturday and the guide Bobo was very knowledgeable and he showed us soweto inside out ,gave us enough information about the town,he made us walk around with a local representative who showed us their daily lifestyle and we also had the chance to interact with a local school that we wanted to donate some school stuffs to ,we were not rushed at all ,after that he took us to a local shabeen were we had our traditional lunch which was very tasty,it was our first time visiting soweto but we felt so accommodated as he was very friendly and willing to answer all our questions which was very professional to us,at the apartheid museum he walked us around for a bit as we wanted to see most of the things ourselves but he told us to give him a shout if we wanted help or to know something which we found very helpful ,I recommend moafrika tours to anyone who wishes to visit the township ,their services are out of this world they were on time for our pick up and dropped us after the tour at our hotel at no extra cost ,the price is worth it as they delivered the services that we wanted,i can highly recommend them to anyone who wishes to have a day tour in and around Johanesburg

We booked a full day tour Soweto and Apartheidmuseum for our family of 5, very last minute. Through mail, everything was arranged quickly and smooth. Everything was good, from pick-up untill return. There was one problem: we had to catch a flight in the afternoon, and they promised us to be back at the hotel to pick up the luggage on time. The guide didn’t know, and when we realised that it was getting too late he immediately arranged another van which driver really made all the effort he could to get us back on time. It worked: we picked up our luggage and instead of letting us go by hotel shuttle, he took us to the airport himself! Great service with a big smile.
The tour was good; enough time to see the highlights of the museum, good lunch at nice spot in Soweto and not too long but educational visit to Soweto itself. Most impressive was a short visit to a local family with a guide who lived there.

We were very excited about our trip to Johannesburg and we booked our Soweo/Apartheid Museum Tour with MoAfrica! I have to say that we were just thrilled! It was so much more than that! We had the opportunity to go downtown and see the Carlton Hotel where my husband used to stay 30 years ago, and to go to Top of Africa as well. From there it was a grand review of the whole area, with our guide, Nick, explaining to us what we were seeing from above…. places we had already visited as well as what was yet to come! We were a small group of 6 in the morning which grew to 8 in the afternoon, but we all enjoyed each other and our guide as we proceeded through the day. We also were very impressed and pleased with our guide in Soweto!!!! When reviewing our day and looking at the booklet, “Things You Must See in Johannesburg,” I was thrilled to say that we saw it all! GREAT tour! Complete, thorough and fun!

MoAfrika provided a great tour. They picked me up on time and were great tour guides and hosts. They also took me to the Airport following the tour. I’d highly recommend them!

I spent a day with MoAfrika’s wonderful guide Bobo along with about 6 other tourists visiting the Soweto area and museums. The Soweto portion of the trip was excellent, starting with driving through areas that were quite a bit nicer and middle-class relative to what I expected from Soweto’s general reputation. However, we then moved onto to the Kliptown neighborhood which was an area of deep and profound poverty. Bobo transitioned out of this portion of the tour and a guide who lives in Kliptown took over (Vuzi?). Vuzi took us deep into the Kliptown neighborhood, exploring the area in a great amount of detail and intimacy that related directly to his living in that area. We actually went into a shanty of one of his relatives, which was a special experience. Afterwards, we rejoined Bobo and continued on to a restaurant for lunch which was a decent ‘braii’ style lunch. We visited the Hector Pieterson Museum, which memorializes the student movement starting in 1976 with the tragic death of this young boy and the protests that ultimately led to the end of Apartheid. We visited the street that Mandela briefly lived on and also of Bishop Tutu, which I thought was a bit touristy. Lastly, we went to the Apartheid Museum which is a must-see on any visit to Johannesburg. Overall, it was a fun, fascinating and eye-opening day which I would strongly endorse

    Jan 16, 2018

Saw a side of this beautiful country I had never experienced and got the opportunity to jump off the Orlando towers which is something I probably never would have done if it wasn’t for this tour. The tour guide was very informative and I got to learn more about the history of South Africa.

    Can’t wait to go again

We had a great experience with MoAfrika Tours. Sunny was our guide for this tour and gave us so much information about the history of Soweto. We were able to get tons of pictures and do a little shopping as we went from site to site. The museums were life changing and it was nice to be able to ask Sunny any questions we had about what we were learning

    Jan 16, 2018

We had 2 trips with MoAfrika Tours. First for Lesedi Cultural Village and second to Soweto Tour with Apartheid Museum and lunch. Arranged online and I got immediate response from a wonderful and understanding staff. Both tours were perfect. Had a pleasant time and good information especially second tour with our guide Nick, who explains us many things and fact about South Africa. For example, Robot = Signal. We asked for Halal food or seafood/fish, and he fulfilled our needs.
Thank you MoAfrika and special thanks to Nick

My group used this company for my study abroad trip in Johannesburg. Our guide was Goodwill aka Khutso. He was great at informing us on the history of South Africa and it seemed there was nothing that he did not have answers for. Goodwill also was very good at providing information that we didn’t even have questions for while driving to next stops on our itinerary. Goodwill and our driver Peter were always on time or early to pick us up for the three days we required their services and made sure to get us to and from the airport on time. The van that we were escorted in was very comfortable and came with space for our luggage, A/C and heat, and enough space to stretch. Goodwill escorted us to many different areas such as schools, restaurants, local neighborhoods, malls, and museums. Goodwill also knew where to find attractions for thrill seekers but we were on a strict itinerary and did not have time to stop at any.

As a former South African this was a. journey that was long overdue . It was well organised ,(pick ups and drop offs where you needed) the tour guide was eloquent and passionate about Soweto . He spoke from his own experiences. Some of the parts are shocking when you visit the slums and see such disparity of wealth in Soweto. the museum was very informative and educational to see how unjust one race could be against another . No cameras allowed inside the museum so pack it away when you go inside and take bottles of water as it’s very hot and dusty Mo Afrika tours I would highly recommend

The driver was a bit late to pick us up, reason was traffic. It was really nice to see Soweto and to walk around a bit. Goodwell is a very friendly guy, he explains a lot about RSA and South Africa. We were with 3 kids and he was very patient and helpful.
Lunch was also great experience. Can fully recommend MoAfrika Tours and Goodwell.
