Come and join us on a fun filled morning guided tour of Soweto, with a lunch stop in a local Shebeen.

Soweto consists of a community of extremes. On the one hand there is abject poverty and on the other hand there is extraordinary wealth in the upper class suburbs such as Diepkloof Extension and Selection Park. Some of the houses in that area sell for over one and two million rands. Today Soweto is the largest Black residential area in South Africa and has a population of more than 3.5 Million people with the land in extent of 120KM squared. There is a visible development since 1994 (Post Apartheid Era).

Refuel with the traditional Shebeen Lunch ( buy and Braai) at   local Restaurant, enjoy the delicious tastes and smells of local cuisine.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. He described things as we drove and let us wander on our own in the museum. The Soweto tour was very good. His place chosen for lunch was tasty and ready for us. We loved the fact that he took us to our b and b when we were done.

Stopping at FNB Soccer City, driving through “Beverly Hills”, past the hostels and on to the Walter Sisulu Freedom Square in the heart of Kliptown was an experience of a lifetime! Visiting Regina Mundi Church with the most beautiful stained glass windows depicting the Soweto uprising gave a glimpse into what life was like during the 1970’s apartheid era. Maponya Mall, Hector Peterson museum and surrounds, Vilakazi Street with a final stop for lunch at the landmark Cooling Towers gave a taste of the old and contemporary Soweto. An experience not to be missed!!!

Review from TripAdivsor

Today we did the afternoon tour through SOWETO. With Joseph we had an extreme good Guide. We had a lot of stops to make pictures and enough time to get all the different impressions. We learned a lot of the history of the Townships in general but also the very specific topic in Soweto with Hector Pieterson, Nelson Mandela etc. Joseph was really explaining everything in a way that also our kids (15 & 12) could easily understand him.

If you are in Jo’burg or Pretoria you should take the time and do this tour. It’s really wealth spend time.
