The Maropeng Visitor Centre is an exciting, world-class exhibition, focusing on the development of humans and our ancestors over the past few million years. Maropeng means “returning to the place of origin” in Setswana, the main indigenous language in this area of South Africa. Our ancestors have lived in this area for more than 3-million years.
The Sterkfontein Caves – about 50 km from Johannesburg – is the site of some of the most important discoveries concerning the evolution of man and have been declared a World Heritage Site. If it’s true that Africa is the cradle of all mankind – and most palaeontologists believe this to be so – then Sterkfontein Caves is surely one of the continent’s sacred sites. The Sterkfontein caves have been described as the ‘anthropological treasure-house of the world’.

Tour Reviews
I went to Cradle of Humankind Tour, booked online. I was the only person doing this tour so it was a bit more like a private one 🙂 The driver/guide was really nice and friendly with good knowledge. Cradle was on the top of my list to visit so I was very, very happy with the tour. Would absolutely recommend the operator
I did a trip the Sterkfontein caves and Morapeng trip with Victor and the Pretoria half day tour. He is an entertaining and informed tour guide. He also went the extra mile to get me to the bird park on time after my tour.
I also did a transfer to Sun City with another guide, I can’t remember his name, but he was also very professional. i would definitely recommend Moafrika Tours
Speedy booking process
I booked a tour to Sterkfontein + Maropeng and Lesedi via the Live Chat through Wayne and was impressed by how efficient it was, considering I only did so 1 day before the tour.
Our tour itself was good, guides were friendly and professional, and we especially enjoyed the conversation we had with Arnold. It made the journey back from Lesedi to Melrose Arch a very pleasant one.
However one area of improvement would be to have greater clarity in communications between the office and the guides on the ground. Our guides were not aware that we were visiting Maropeng Visitor’s Centre and we nearly had to miss it. They were also not sure if we have already made payment for our tour. Although it was a minor issue, it would be good if this was communicated to the guides beforehand.
We have had a great trip to the cradle of humankind.
They offer good prices and staff are friendly. We highly recommend the MoAfrika tours to others.
Review from TripAdvisor
My husband and I just returned from our South African vacation. We decided to spend a few days in Johannesburg before going to Cape Town, which was our main objective for this trip. We contacted MoAfrika online and booked this tour. Wayne was extremely helpful and got back to us very promptly. MoAfrika organized pick up from our hotel and our driver was really friendly. We went to Sterkfontein Caves then to the Cradle of Humankind. The guide for our caves tour was so knowledgeable and the Cradle of Humankind was extremely informative. We had the time we needed at each site. I would highly recommend MoAfrika and this tour!

We had more than half a day in Johannesburg and my husband and I chose to do the Sterkfontein Cave and Cradle of Humankind museum visit. You actually need a day to do this tour really well.We were picked up by our driver Kobus who was really wonderful and friendly. I was reluctant to go into the cave but he encouraged me and actually came along with us (paid his own entrance fee)!
I am glad I did do the cave tour because it was not as bad as I thought it would be, so thanks Kobus.
We were also treated to a quick tour of Johannesburg City on our way back at no extra cost so that was a bonus.
MoAfrica Tours – highly recommended and ask for Kobus if you need a friendly driver/tour guide.

Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Caves were very interesting, especially since we were there only TWO DAYS before big announcement about Homo Naledi was made.
Lion Park also fun and interesting.
